Robert Huyler Voorhis Jr. (Bob), husband of Marge Voorhis (nee Bessey) passed away Wednesday, February 18, 2015, at the Haven Hospice Roberts Care Center, following an extended illness.

Bob was born on April 12, 1942, in Orange, New Jersey, and grew up in Summit, NJ, playing football at the Brayton School and soccer at Summit High.

At age 16 Bob spent the summer at his grandparents’ cottage in Seaside Park. He worked on the boardwalk selling tickets to Skee-Ball in the evenings and spent days waterskiing, tearing around Barnegat Bay in his motorboat, and hanging out with friends. It was here that he met Eddie Simonsen and Charlie Eberling, who were his lifelong friends.

Bob graduated from Nichols College in 1964 with a bachelor’s degree in business administration, majoring in finance. Upon graduation he went to work for Sears, following in both of his grandfathers’ footsteps, married, and raised a family.

In the late 1970s Bob moved his family to Manchester, Vermont, where he became a new-car salesman for Hand Motors, a position he kept for roughly 30 years until his retirement. While working at the dealership Bob seemed to be Salesman of the Month roughly half of the time and developed a large and loyal list of return customers. He received many sales awards from General Motors and was awarded a trip to the Caribbean for his performance.

He married Marge Bessey on August 8, 1988.

After retiring, Bob moved to Satsuma, Florida, were he became a member of the Bayou Club, St. John’s River Social Club, and an active member of the San Mateo Presbyterian Church in San Mateo.

Bob is survived by his wife Marge; his sister Sally Wicks (nee Sara Jane Voorhis) and her children; his children Michael C. Voorhis (and his wife Veda) and Sarah V. Hetherington and their mother, Dinah Gamble Wolff; Sarah’s children Alexander and Benjamin; his stepson Michael S. Gadway (and his wife Marcia), and Bob’s granddaughter, Shannon M. Gadway.

Services will be held at 11:00AM on Wednesday, February 25, 2015 at the San Mateo Presbyterian Church on Route 100 in San Mateo, Florida.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Haven Hospice Roberts Care Center in Palatka, Florida.
