Obituary for Carlous Long
Carlous Leo Long, Jr., 80, of Palatka, passed away Saturday, December 1, 2012 at home surrounded by family and friends following a long battle with cancer. A native of Welaka, he was a lifelong resident of Putnam County. Carlous retired as a bleach plant operator from Georgia Pacific after 43 years of service. While at G.P., he served as union president of the United Paper Workers International Union (UPIU) – Local #598. He was also a member of the Kiwanis Club of Palatka where he was Kiwanian of the year and a member of Palatka Masonic Lodge #34 F&AM.; He was instrumental in starting a Little League Baseball League in San Mateo and coached a team there and in Palatka for over 25 years. Carlous was also very active for 25 years as a “Co-Pilot” with the Pilot Club of Palatka. He was an avid Florida Gators fan and will fore-ever be remembered for his humor and story-sharing. Carlous always made himself available to help others through the various organizations he was involved in and was often heard saying “I can do that” when approached about a project that needed to be done. He was described as a giving, caring and kind friend to many people and who never wanted to take credit for the things he was able to get accomplished. He will be dearly missed by his many friends and those who came to depend on him.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Carlous L. Long, Sr. and Carrie Sapp Long, a brother, John Thomas Long and a sister, Gladys Lorraine Reiter.
He is survived by his loving partner of 25 years, Marilyn Nicholson, his daughter, Dee Sommer, a grandson, Joey Anderson, a great-grandson, Chase Anderson, all of St. Augustine and several nieces, nephews, cousins and many, many friends.
In keeping with Carlous’ wishes, no services are scheduled.
