Obituary for Carolyn MATHE
CAROLYN MATHE
Carolyn Marie
Wonicker Mathe, 80, passed away after a long illness on Feb. 25,
2011 at Haven Hospice Roberts Care Facility in Palatka.
She is survived
by her husband of 63 years, John J. Mathe Sr.; her children, Thena
Catherine Mathe, of Palatka; John J. Mathe Jr. and wife Pegi, of
Interlachen; Maria Mathe-Bergh and husband John, of Round Rock, TX;
Liam P. Mathe and wife Suzanne, of Interlachen; and adopted daughter
Anna L. Johns, of Palatka; four grandchildren, Renee Mathe Unsworth
and husband Shawn, of St. Augustine; Christopher Flowers of Delray
Beach; Desiree Mathe Wright and husband Joseph, of Interlachen; and
Kara Mathe and fiancée Robert Comstock, of Gainesville; nine
great-grandchildren; and many cousins, extended family members, and
friends.
She is preceded
in death by her parents, Arthur Wonicker and Thena Alena Ebersold
Wonicker; and brother, A.E. “BoBo” Wonicker.
Carolyn was
born June 3, 1930 at St. Vincent’s Hospital (Health Center) in
Jacksonville, Fla., where she lived until moving to Interlachen in
1964.
She attended
Landon High School in Jacksonville.
She was married
to John on Sept. 24, 1947 in St. Paul’s Rectory, Jacksonville. She
was a former member of Assumption Catholic Church in Jacksonville,
and a current member of St. John The Evangelist Catholic Church in
Interlachen. At St. John The Evangelist, she was the first president
of the Parish Council and the first president of the Ladies Guild.
She also served as treasurer of the Diocese of St. Augustine
Deanery.
She was a
member of the Ladies Auxiliary of American Legion Post No. 293, and
the Interlachen Lions Club, where she served as a former Lions
Auxiliary president. In addition, she was a past president of the
Interlachen PTO, and a volunteer with 4-H of Putnam County.
She worked as a
receptionist for seven years with Dr. Joe Maltby of the Animal
Medical Clinic in Palatka, and was secretary/treasurer of The Mathe
Corporation in Interlachen until retirement.
Carolyn is
remembered by family and friends as a generous person and as a
gracious hostess of many celebrations in her home, sharing her love
of food and cooking. She enjoyed her collections, including her
beloved cookbooks. She also loved gardening and made sure there were
always flowers in bloom.
A viewing will
be from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 27 at Johnson-Overturf Funeral Home
in Interlachen.
A Mass of
Resurrection will be held at 11 a.m.
Monday, Feb. 28 in St. John The Evangelist Catholic Church in
Interlachen with The Rev. Father Robert L. Napier officiating. A
reception will follow in Heerey Hall at the church.
A private
family interment will be held in the Mathe-Berklemann cemetery.
