HERMAN “CHIP” GERBER

Herman “Chip” Gerber went to be with Jesus on Sunday, March 1, 2009 at his daughter, Mary Ann and her family’s house after an extended illness.  He was diagnosed with Lewy Body Dementia with Parkinson’s like affects.  Chip was born and raised in Dover, Ohio.  He was of Swiss, German and English ancestry.  He moved to this area in 2002 from Canton, Ohio.  Chip was a graduate of Tuscarawas Valley High School in 1964 and graduated with honors from Columbus State College in 1974 with an Associate Degree in Social Work.  He also attended Mount Vernon Bible College in Mt. Vernon, Ohio and Central Bible College in Springfield, MO.  The class room and reading were two of his favorite places to spend time.  He was a life-long student.  Chip spent much of his life as a licensed social worker for the State of Ohio.  He especially enjoyed working with the elderly that were abused, neglected and exploited.  He also was a court appointed Guardian for many abused elderly.  He was a licensed minister, assistant minister and youth director.  Chip was an active member of St. James United Methodist Church and attended the contemporary worship service.  He loved his church family and volunteered as needed and able.  Chip valued his many friendships.  He served as a volunteer for the Bread of Life. He felt deeply in living out his personal faith moment by moment and dared reaching out to his world.  Being loved and forgiven by Jesus, he felt he could risk loving others as himself and encouraged other’s to do the same thing.  It was important for him to be part of the solution and not the problem, doing what he could to be positive and not negative.  Chip married Sharon Lynn Willey and spent many happy years together with her.  She was his caregiver.  Haven Hospice Roberts Care Center was also involved with his care.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Andrew and Mary Gerber and 2 brothers, Harold and Bill Gerber.

The Gerber’s have 2 daughters, Lynn Gerber and Mary Ann Gravue and husband, David both of the area, 7 grandchildren, Ashley Morris, Jeffrey Morris, Bryan Fury, Shawn Fury, Nicholas Gravue, Darren Gravue and Katie Gravue, 2 great-grandchildren, Nevaeh Morris and Bre Onna Gravue, 2 sisters, Anna Kaiser of Dover,Ohio, Norma Dear and husband, Paul of Springfield, MO.

A celeberation of Chip’s life will be 2:00 PM, Wednesday, March 4, 2009 at St. James United Methodist Church with Reverend Hardy B. Sandlin, III officiating.  Burial will follow in Oak Hill West Cemetery.  The family will receive friends at Johnson Overturf Funeral Home on Tuesday, March 3rd from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM.

Flowers are gratefully accepted or memorial donations can be made to Haven Hospice Roberts Care Center, 6400 St. Johns Avenue, Palatka, FL 32177.

We are all thinking of you and your family at this sad time.  Chip's father and my grandmother were brother and sister, and our paths would cross one a year during our childhood at the family reunion. Deepest sympathies from my mother Iona Winkler, her sisters, Edna Clay and Bonnie Mcfeeders. Sandy and Don Smith
